Thanksgiving break was long and wonderful; I just couldn’t bear to come back to a place where I have to take so many tests in such a short amount of time. Finals week may kill me. I woke up this morning in my own bed at the crack of dawn, zipped up my suitcase, and drove the 2 ½ hours back to school for class. I have been lucky enough to go to a school semi-close to home and to get classes that don’t start later than 10:30, but when you have been home with your family and the Christmas decorations are up and you’ve slept in your own bed for a week you find it really hard to bring yourself back into the world of school, no matter how much of a blessing it is. So I semi-grumpily drove back to school, dropped my stuff in my dorm, and headed off to class. I made it through classes and headed back to my dorm.
As we have been near the Thanksgiving holiday, I have done what any normal human does and thought about what I was thankful for. Today, a few of the top things on my list are my roommates: P, E, and C. Because when I headed back to my dorm after class, all of us gradually came together and cuddled on P’s bed and just gossiped, bickered, and laughed until we all felt semi-better about the impending doom that was our finals week and forced ourselves to get up and actually do stuff. Never in a million years did I think I would be as close with my roommates as I am with E, C, and P. I always kind of thought that my roommate(s) would be someone who was there, but that I wouldn’t really hang out with. I figured we’d probably have our own group of friends and only hang out on occasion. I didn’t think we would hate each other, I just thought we wouldn’t be the best of buddies.
However, what actually happened is that my roomies and I became our own friend group (along with our adopted roomie, K, who lives down the hall) and I could never be more thankful than I am that I have found such great friends in them. The best part was that while our friendship has grown over the past several months, the beginning of it was simply decided. There was no “getting to know you” stage, there was just “oh, we all live together so now we are friends”. From the first night on we were a group – simple as that. I have always had someone to eat with, to laugh with, to complain to, to study with.
There is never a dull moment with C, P, and E. We all bring something different and unique to the table, but we still share the same morals and beliefs. Whether we are sitting around watching Netflix or driving around past midnight, these girls have made my first semester something to be very thankful for. I am so glad that when I am having a rough day I can just cuddle up and listen to my sassy roommates. They make leaving for Christmas break a little bittersweet. But for now, I am thankful I have them for the rest of this week, and all of next semester. After that, I am thankful that even if we don’t always live together, I will still have them as friends.
